Surfaces our work more for you across Google Search and AI answers.

I spent this morning doing what I do every October: deciding which directories get built next year and which ideas go back in the drawer. This time I made the scoring public. The board below is the one I'm walking through on video, and the post exists so you can read the reasoning at your own pace and check the sources.

A warning before the list. Scores are my judgment, not measurements. The signals behind them are real and linked. The ranking is an opinion about where to spend a year.

Quick read: A niche directory is a website that lists providers in one category, organized by location and by the attributes buyers filter on, with pages generated from a database rather than written one at a time. The ten niches below were scored on five criteria (search demand, a 2027 tailwind such as a new law or market shift, how weak the current directories are, how much a lead or listing is worth, and fit with an existing portfolio), each rated 1 to 5 for a maximum of 25. The top scorer is a compounding pharmacy directory, driven by the FDA's 2026 restrictions on compounded GLP-1 drugs and the patient confusion that followed. The mechanics of building any of them are covered in our complete guide to building a directory website.

How the scoring works

Five criteria, 1 to 5 each. Search demand: do people type "near me" queries for this, in volume? Tailwind: is something happening in 2027 (a law, a market shift, a platform decline) that pushes people to search? Competitor gap: are the existing directories thin, stale, or single-operator? Ticket size: what is one lead or one listing worth to the business being listed? Portfolio fit: can it share code, data, or an audience with something already running?

Add them up. Anything above 20 gets built first. Anything under 16 waits for a slot. If you disagree with a number, the criteria are at least on the table.

Two launches a quarter is the realistic pace for a small shop running an agent for content and a human for everything else. Backlog items wait for a slot or a stronger signal.

The order is not strictly by score. The fiber arts directory ships in Q2 because the sizing work is already done; the menopause and pelvic floor finders ship after compounding because they reuse its code. Sequencing by what you can reuse beats sequencing by what you like.

The ten, in detail

Supply, the 2027 signal, how it makes money, what could go wrong, the first move, and who is already there. Every figure traces to the signals table below.

1Compounding Pharmacy Directory22 / 25Q1 2027
Find a 503A compounder for HRT, pediatric, pet and custom meds
Supply~7,500 pharmacies specialize in compounding (APhA estimate); 80% run a single location
Why 2027FDA has ended shortage-based GLP-1 compounding and proposed (Apr 30, 2026) keeping semaglutide and tirzepatide off the 503B bulks list. Patients still need compounders for HRT, thyroid, pediatric and veterinary formulations, and the confusion drives search.
MoneyClaimed listings + featured tiers; cash-pay pharmacies (57% are cash-only) can pay. State-law explainer pages and a 'what can still be compounded' tracker for AEO.
RiskYMYL health niche: needs pharmacist-reviewed content, clear 'not medical advice' framing, and zero claims about specific drugs.
First moveSeed from state board of pharmacy license lists + PCAB accreditation list; build state x specialty pages.
Incumbentscompoundingfinder.com (thin, lead-form driven)

2ADU Builders & Designers21 / 25Q2 2027
Backyard-home builders, plan sets and permit help by city
SupplyCotality: ADU permits up 1,100% from 2015 to 2025; now 7% of all residential construction permits
Why 202718 states have statewide ADU laws and 11 of those passed in the last four years (Mercatus). Maryland's local ADU rules are required by Oct 1, 2026. Every new state creates a fresh 'ADU builder near me' market with no incumbent directory.
MoneyHigh-ticket lead gen: per-lead or exclusive-territory pricing to builders, plus pre-approved plan sellers and ADU lenders as sponsors.
RiskLocal-services SEO is competitive and lead quality matters; builders churn if leads are tire-kickers. Needs a real quote-request flow.
First moveStart with the 18 statewide-law states; city x unit-type pages (detached, garage conversion, JADU) and a cost calculator.
IncumbentsMaxable Space (CA-centric), regional builder sites
Source: Cotality, July 2026; Mercatus 'Taxonomy of State ADU Laws 2025'
3Indie Fiber Arts Designer Directory20 / 25Q2 2027
The craft-pattern one: knit and crochet designers, dyers, tech editors, yarn shops
SupplyRavelry's peak was 89,250 patterns published in 2020; designers now scattered across Payhip, Etsy, LoveCrafts and Ribblr
Why 2027Discovery has moved to TikTok and YouTube Shorts (KnitPro), while the only directories are single-operator (Yarn Database) or stale since 2020 (Indie Pattern Portal). Nobody runs programmatic designer x craft x category x yarn-weight pages.
MoneyYarn retailer affiliates (LoveCrafts, WeCrochet, Hobbii), featured designer profiles, local yarn shop directory, calculators (yardage, gauge) as email capture.
RiskCommunity is hostile to AI-generated content; needs a paid editorial advisor and human-reviewed copy. Low per-listing ticket.
First moveFinish the sizing: a 30-keyword SERP sweep across designer, pattern and yarn-shop intents, then a domain hunt. Pick the name before any more design rounds.
IncumbentsYarn Database; Hooked on Patterns sidebar directory

4Menopause & HRT Clinic Finder19 / 25Q3 2027
Certified menopause practitioners, telehealth and in-person, by state
SupplyAn estimated 1.3M US women reach menopause each year (Business Insider); a few dozen menopause-care startups have launched since 2010
Why 2027Telehealth menopause clinics are proliferating and FDA labeling updates on hormone therapy are widening the eligible patient pool. Pairs directly with #1: compounded bioidentical HRT is a top compounding use case, so the two sites cross-link.
MoneyClinic featured listings, telehealth affiliate/partner deals, symptom and treatment-option content for AEO. Share infrastructure with the compounding directory.
RiskYMYL again, and a credentials question: list only clinicians with verifiable certification (e.g., Menopause Society certified practitioners).
First moveBuild on the compounding site's codebase; seed from public practitioner-certification lists; state x telehealth-availability pages.
IncumbentsMenopause Society practitioner finder (official, but not SEO-built)

5Luxury Restroom Trailer Rentals19 / 25Q3 2027
Event restroom trailers for weddings, festivals and job sites, by metro
SupplyRentals run $400-$1,500 per day per unit (The Lavatory); one Florida operator founded 2024 listed for sale at $550,726 annual revenue
Why 2027This is the Frey Chu lead-gen example you already know: high-ticket, seasonal, fragmented regional operators with no national finder. Industry sources say high-end units are driving portable-sanitation growth.
MoneyPay-per-lead to operators (quote requests for weddings and events), plus manufacturer and financing sponsors.
RiskSmaller total search volume; revenue is lumpy around wedding season. Needs a quote form that captures date, headcount and location to be worth anything to operators.
First moveSeed from Google Maps/state business registries for 'restroom trailer rental'; metro x event-type pages; a 'how many units do I need' calculator.
IncumbentsNone national; manufacturer dealer locators only
Source: The Lavatory; BusinessBroker.net listing; Satellite Industries
6Cottage Food & Home Bakery Finder18 / 25Q4 2027
Licensed home bakers and food-freedom producers, by state and product
SupplyNine states expanded cottage food laws in 2026 to allow refrigerated (TCS) foods like cheesecakes without a commercial kitchen
Why 2027Food-freedom laws require direct sales only (no wholesale, no marketplaces), which means producers have a discovery problem a directory solves. State x product legality pages are an enormous programmatic surface.
MoneyFree listings to build supply fast; featured placement; affiliate on packaging, labels, cottage-food insurance and courses; state-law guides as the traffic engine.
RiskLowest ticket on the list; producers are hobbyists with small budgets. Monetization leans on affiliate and sponsors, not listings.
First movePublish the 50-state law explainer cluster first, then open free listings.
IncumbentsForrager (law info, weak directory), Castiron (marketplace)

7Pelvic Floor Physical Therapy Finder18 / 25Q4 2027
Pelvic health PTs for postpartum, menopause and pelvic pain, by city
SupplyAPTA's July 2026 State of Pelvic Health PT report finds demand is growing faster than the specialist workforce, with extended wait times and clinicians at or beyond full schedules
Why 2027Pelvic floor PT has gone mainstream through postpartum and menopause care, but the specialists are scattered across hospital systems and cash-pay boutique clinics with no SEO-built finder. Third leg of the women's midlife health cluster with #1 and #4; shares the codebase.
MoneyCash-pay clinic featured listings, telehealth pelvic PT partners, condition-explainer content for AEO, 'what to expect at your first visit' lead magnets.
RiskYMYL; must list only licensed PTs and verify specialty credentials (e.g., APTA pelvic health certification). Smaller supply than the other health niches.
First moveSeed from state PT license rolls plus public specialty-certification lists; city x concern pages (postpartum, prolapse, menopause, pelvic pain).
IncumbentsAPTA Find a PT; Pelvic Rehab practitioner directory (Herman & Wallace)

8Microschool Finder17 / 25Backlog
Microschools and learning pods by state, with ESA eligibility
SupplyNational Microschooling Center surveyed 1,000 microschools across all 50 states, DC and Puerto Rico (The 74, June 2026)
Why 2027Half of microschools now get more than a quarter of tuition from state choice programs, up from 38% a year earlier; Texas's ESA program launches fall 2026. Parents with new ESA dollars search for schools that accept them.
MoneySchool featured listings, ESA-eligibility guides per state, curriculum and microschool-software affiliates, consultant sponsorships.
RiskPolitically charged niche; supply data is scattered and schools open/close fast. Needs a verification cadence.
First moveStart with ESA states only (AZ, FL, TX, AL, IA, etc.); state x grade-band pages; 'does this school accept ESA' as the core filter.
IncumbentsNational Microschooling Center finder; Prenda/KaiPod own networks

9Newborn Care Specialist & Postpartum Doula Finder17 / 25Backlog
Night nannies, newborn care specialists and postpartum doulas, by metro
SupplyCare.com's Feb 2026 guide puts newborn care specialists and postpartum doulas at $30-$40 or more per hour; a Houston specialist profiled in Sept 2026 charges $45-$50
Why 2027Overnight newborn care is a word-of-mouth market served by small agencies and solo specialists, so parents search cold and find agency sites or Care.com. Same new-parent audience Moontuck is built for, so cross-promotion is free.
MoneySpecialist and agency featured listings, newborn-sleep and postpartum content, baby-gear affiliates on the existing Amazon tag, Moontuck cross-sell.
RiskTrust and vetting matter more than anywhere else on this list; needs certification display and background-check badges, not just a listing. Agencies may resist being listed beside their own contractors.
First moveStart with 15 large metros; metro x service pages (overnight, daytime, twins, postpartum doula); certification filter from NCSA and DONA public lists.
IncumbentsDoulaMatch, Care.com, local nanny agencies
Source: IBTimes UK, Sept 2026 (citing Care.com Feb 2026 guide)
10Mobile Notary & Signing Agent Finder15 / 25Backlog
Mobile notaries, loan signing agents and RON providers, by county
SupplyMillions of people hold notary commissions in the United States; most are part-time and unlisted anywhere searchable
Why 2027Mortgage refinance activity picked up when rates dipped in early 2026, which pulls signing-agent demand with it. 'Mobile notary near me' is evergreen local search with weak, dated incumbents.
MoneyNotary featured listings (they pay for NNA, 123notary and Snapdocs today), RON platform affiliates, title-company lead gen.
RiskSnapdocs and NNA own the title-company demand side; incumbents 123notary and NotaryCafe are old but entrenched. Low ticket per notary.
First moveCounty x service pages (loan signing, apostille, hospital/jail signings); seed from state SOS notary rolls where public.
Incumbents123notary, NotaryCafe, Snapdocs, NNA SigningAgent.com

Ideas that look like winners and are not

A few that came up this year and did not make the board, with the reason, so you can apply the same filter.

  • Anything whose supply depends on one platform's API. The first version of the fiber arts idea was a mobile app on top of Ravelry's data. A directory that dies when someone else changes their terms is a hobby.
  • AI tools directories. The category leaders measure traffic in the millions of monthly visits, and a hundred clones launched behind them. Crowded is not the same as closed, but it is not where a solo operator wins in 2027.
  • A niche you cannot explain to a provider in one sentence. The badge-outreach step in the programmatic directory playbook only works if the listed business understands immediately why being on your site helps them. If the pitch takes a paragraph, the backlinks never come.
  • Health niches without a credentialing plan. Three of the ten above are health-adjacent. Each one lists only licensed, verifiable providers, and none of them will carry a word of treatment advice. Skip the niche entirely if you are not willing to do that part.

FAQ

How did you pick the ten?

From a longer list built over the year: ideas from readers, from our own research pipeline, and from gaps noticed while running the properties we already own. Each was scored on the five criteria above and the top ten by score, after removing anything we would not want to operate, made the board.

Are the scores based on data?

The signals are sourced and linked; the 1-to-5 ratings are judgment calls made against those signals. Treat the scores as a ranking aid for a specific operator, not as a market forecast.

Why is a health niche ranked first when health content is risky?

Because the risk is manageable and the gap is wide. The compounding directory lists licensed pharmacies, links to their own pages, and explains the regulatory landscape without recommending treatment. That is the line, and it is a line a directory can hold.

Can I build one of these myself?

Yes, and several readers have. Start with the directory build guide, pick a niche with a supply source you can get, and ship the state-law or explainer content before you ship listings. If you'd rather hand the build to us, that's the door.

Will you build all ten?

No. Two a quarter is the plan, and the backlog three only move if something changes. The list is public so the reasoning can be checked, not so every item on it gets built.

If one of these is the directory you've been meaning to build, Directory Stack is the playbook, scripts and templates we use to build ours, for $149 one time.

Want a back office for your site?

The build is free on any Care plan with a 12-month minimum. Care starts at $199/mo, and you can switch tiers anytime.
